Buying Your First Mattress

We browse through endless copies of catalogues and magazines while visiting various furniture stores when looking for suitable furnishing for the house. We think of items such as the sofa, the dining table and the cabinets, but many of us rarely think of what kind of mattress we want. We simply categorise the mattress as “the bed” till we go down to the furniture shop and realise that “the bed” is not as simple as it seems, with aspects such as the bed frame, types of mattress and size of the mattress to consider.

It might be a little overwhelming at times. But to make the process of moving into your new home a little easier, here are some tips we have for you on how to choose the right mattress for yourself:

Don’t just LOOK at it, LIE on it

We all have different requirements for support, depending on factors such as our weight and build. When in the mattress shop, lie down on each mattress for a while and see how it feels to get a better gauge instead of simply pressing the mattress to get a feel of it.

If you are going to share a bed with your partner, choose the mattress together, where both of you can lie on the mattress and see if it is comfortable enough for the both of you.

Understand what type of mattress is right for you

Memory Foam

Memory foam offers great support, pressure relief and contour for the body

Latex

Latex foam is known for its cooling properties and great bounce. It is typically a good choice for those who want something similar to the memory foam, but without the pronounced contour

Coils

Coils are known to be cooling and is a great option for those who are looking for beds that provides strong edge support and comfort

Hybrid

There are also hybrid mattresses, which are basically mattresses designed to maximise comfort and the various benefits of the different materials.

Bonus: Get Storage Bed to Store Your Things

In Singapore where most of us stay in apartments and flats, storage beds are extremely handy as they help maximise space, providing us with additional storage to keep our items in an easy and convenient manner.

With almost a third of our lives spend on the bed sleeping, it is important for us to choose the right mattress, considering how sleep is the time when our body recovers and restores itself.
