Eat moon cake accompanied by Chinese tea while gazing at the full moon shining brightly upon us. There are a few stories with regards to the Moon Festival, here's a few below:

The Origin of Lantern - Chang E flying to the Moon

It was said that long time ago there were 10 suns. The great hero Hou Yi, owning to his great strength shot down nine of the ten suns. The queen of heaven who decided to reward him presented him an elixir to ascend immediately to heaven to become a god. Instead of drinking he presented it to Chang E for safe keeping. But due to human desires, Peng Meng his disciple took the advantage and demanded for it. To protect it, Chang E drank the elixir and ascended to sky. Chang E's great love for her husband drew her towards the Moon, which is the nearest place to the earth on the heaven. Hou Yi was devastated and shouted for his love, and saw a figure just like his wife in the Moon. Since then, the custom of sacrificing to the moon has been widely spread among the folklore. Therefore folks also light up lanterns to send them up to the sky with messages to send Chang E love from Earth, showing them the undying love Hou Yi has for her.

The Origins of Mooncake - Zhu Yuanzhang

In the late Yuan Dynasty, due to the cruel rule of government, people have tried to revolt. Zhu Yuanzhang, founder of Ming Dynasty united and organised a revolt. But due to the strict government, it was hard to pass messages among people. The counselor Liu Bowen thought to hide messages in moon cakes and had them sent to different resistance forces. The uprising turned to be very successful and Zhu was so happy. He awarded his subjects with moon cakes on the following Mid-Autumn Festival. Since then, eating moon cakes has been a custom on Mid-Autumn Festival.   Check out our DIY lantern making tutorials! Mooncakes promotions!
